Plot

After a shipwreck, an intelligent robot named Roz finds herself stranded on a deserted island

In order to survive the harsh environment, Roz bonds with the island’s animals and takes care of an orphaned baby goose. Lupita Nyong’o joins writer-director Chris Sanders to discuss the film’s meaningful end credits and their time together creating Wild Robot.

Roz: [from the trailer] Sometimes, to survive, you have to become more than you were programmed to be

According to writer Peter Brown, the inspiration for Wild Robot came from a sketch he made of a robot in a tree. He then asked the question, “What would an intelligent robot do in the wild?” When the fox enters the cabin, a moose growls near the door, but the sound effect is a recording of a bear.

Post-credits scene. A squirrel appears and laughs; Fink throws an acorn at the squirrel.

Kiss the Sky (From ‘The Wild Robot’) Screenplay: Delacey, Jordan Johnson, Stefan Johnson, Maren Morris, Michael Pollack, Ali Tamposi Performed by: Maren Morris Produced by: The Monsters & The Stranger & Isaiah Tejada Orchestral arrangements by: Kris Bowers Maren Morris, courtesy of Columbia Records in agreement with Sony Music Entertainment. Signifying the end of a wildly successful and fun era for DreamWorks’ in-house animation studios, which will eventually transition to outsourcing, Chris Sanders’ latest venture behind the camera, following his popular work as the helmer of the hit films Lilo & Stitch , Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon and The Croods are great farewells to a franchise that has given us so many animated classics, while Wild Robot is a real contender for the box office hit Inside Out 2 as the animated film of 2024.

What stands out above everything else here is Robot’s CG animation style, which Sanders himself describes as “a Monet painting in a Miyazaki forest” – a style that creates more than its fair share of visually excellent segments, and when that atmosphere is set by the carefully crafted ensembles of thoughtful voice actors Lupita Nyong’o as the lovely Roz and Pedro Pascal as the initially obnoxious but ultimately lovable Fink, bolstered by Kris Bowers’ exemplary and rousing soundtrack, Robot is the complete package in every way

The adaptation of author Peter Brown’s successful novel of the same name, Robot has already garnered rave reviews and comparisons to The Iron Giant and Sanders’ dragon adventure, which is by no means faint praise for a film of this genre, which here comes as the complete package that is sure to inspire youngsters who will flock to hear the tale of missing robot Roz and her growing friendship with the clever fox Fink and the young goose Brightbeak to whom she acts as a surrogate mother, but also a film that will appeal to older viewers who will certainly find much to enjoy in a film so beautifully crafted, full of heart and soul. Making the most of its brisk 100-minute runtime, Robot has very few breaks or downtimes, while Roz’s journey of discovery with her new friends and what it means to truly care and love beyond her expected boundaries takes us on a familiar theatrical outing, but one that’s handled with enough uniqueness and a sense of its own identity that there’s never any fear that Robot is simply ticking boxes along the way to create a memorable outing that will have you cheering, laughing, and most likely, crying throughout its duration.
